UPDATED: WINNER’S ANNOUNCED! –> Tribute Contest – Enter to Win 1 of 3 Vancouver Millionaires Prize Packs!

Millionaires Tribute Contest

In late 1912, my Great Grandfather Fred “Cyclone” Taylor packed up his bags in Ottawa and headed out west to Vancouver. Joining the Millionaires as the team’s highest paid player, “Cyc” embarked on a career in Vancouver that’s well-known to this day. I’m proud to say that my Great Grandfather accomplished the following:

  • In 1915, he helped lead the Millionaires to the only Stanley Cup victory in Vancouver history
  • In 1947, he was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame
  • In 1957, he helped his oldest son (my Grandfather) start Cyclone Taylor Sports

This weekend, before their game on March 16 vs. Detroit, the Vancouver Canucks will be honouring “Cyc” and his many teammates. We will be in attendance, and a member of the Taylor family will be dropping the puck at centre ice before the game.

In honour of this special event, we’d like to invite Lower Mainland hockey fans to help pay tribute to the Vancouver Millionaires and 100 years of hockey in Vancouver!

@FyferTheSniper – Cyclone Taylor’s October “Beauty of the Month”

This is the October edition of the Cyclone Taylor Sports (CTS) Beauty of the Month. The point of these player interviews is to get to know some of the local personalities currently playing the game that we all love – hockey. Want a skating or shooting tip? Insight into what gear other players are using? Some of the funniest dressing room pranks? If so, keep reading!

Is it possible to have a better-looking Twitter profile picture? Doubtful.

CTS would like to present to you our October Beauty of the MonthTyler Fyfer (@FyferTheSniper). Current team: Delta Hockey Academy AAA (Midget). Position: right wing, Shoots: right. Size: 5’10, 151 lbs

Q&A

1. How long have you been playing hockey?

  • First time I ever strapped on the skates was when I was 4 years old – just kept on going from there and I’ll never regret that decision.”

,

2. What is your favourite hockey memory to date?

  • “The 2011-2012 season when I played for the Cloverdale Colts Bantam AAA team. We won 4 tournaments, the Final 4 playoffs, made Provincials, and at one point in the year we won 32 games in a row.”

3. What is your favourite NHL team and favourite NHL player? Why?

  • “My favourite NHL team is the Toronto Maple Leafs. My grandfather was a huge fan of them back in the day so when my Dad was born, my grandpa passed it down to him who passed it on to me – just runs in the family.

Phil Kessel and Mats Sundin – two pretty good players!

,

  • My favourite player right now is Phil Kessel; I love the way he can skate and put the puck in the net in any situation. My favourite player of all time is Mats Sundin; I’ve always wanted to be like him – he was a hard worker, and had a talent for making plays and scoring goals.”

,,

4. We have many hockey players who read our blog. Can you provide 1 skating tip and 1 shooting tip?

  • Skating tip“Strive to get those long, quick strides with your knees bent of course. If you do that you’ll get power out of your strides which will make you faster.”
  • Shooting tipI’d have to say look at where you’re shooting before you shoot, then release it as hard as you can on every shot. Shoot To Score.”

5. If you were gearing up for game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, what would be the last song you would listen to before skating out for warm ups?

,

6. In regards to your equipment, what do you use? Please fill in the blanks:

Congratulations on your 1st WHL training camp! #Muck #Grind

  • SkatesI wear the Bauer APX skates. They’re really comfortable on my feet, and have a sick style to them. And I like to keep my tongues in – just feels more comfortable.”
  • StickBauer Nexus 1000 and the CCM RBZ as my back-up. Both great sticks, and very strong too.”
  • Gloves: ”Bauer Pro 4 Rolls – probably the most comfortable gloves I’ve ever used.”
  • Helmet“Bauer 9900 bucket.”

,

7. What is your “go to” pre-game meal?

  • “Would have to be Chicken Alfredo pasta.”

8. You recently attended your first Western Hockey League training camp down in Everett, Washington. What are some of the things that stood out the most?

  • On-ice: “I noticed out there that every kid was working his butt off. They were all invited for a reason and they all showed it. Very motivating.”
  • Off-ice: “Fitness testing was taken very seriously, every kid tried to do the best he could. All the vets were showing their class and leadership and making the younger guys feel comfortable. We had some good times.”

9. Hockey players are known for their dressing room pranks. What is the funniest one you have witnessed or been a part of?

  • The funniest one would have to be the time when one of the boys put Rub A535 in my gloves right before the game. Had to wear an old junky pair from the hockey store at the rink, but ended up popping 3 ginos that game. It was pretty funny.”

A535 – perfect for dressing room pranks? You be the judge…

10. Hockey players (especially goalies) are also known for weird pre-game superstitions. Do you have any?

  • “I’m not a big fan of that stuff but I do like to make sure that the blade of my twig doesn’t touch the ground before the game.”

11. You were the creator of a Twitter account with almost 10,000 followers (@ AAAProblems – account was unfortunately shut down). What kind of advice do you have for a hockey player currently on Twitter looking to get a solid following?

  • It is unfortunate that account is shut down now – it had a great following and was a lot of fun. As for how to get followers, I’d say you have to come up with some pretty filthy tweets (funny, serious, inspirational, etc.) and to get your followers to like you. The more you do that, the more retweets you get…which means there’s more and more followers to come.”

________________________________________________________________

CTS would like to thank Tyler for letting us get to know him and for participating in the October Beauty of the Month player interview. And don’t forget, if you’re on Twitter, toss Tyler a follow @FyferTheSniper - he’s a unreal tweeter!

Look out for the “Movember” Beauty of the Month player interview, coming next month! Will it be you?

This is the September edition of the Cyclone Taylor Sports (CTS) Beauty of the Month. Typical Patty Kane —> always chewing on that mouthguard! #Beauty

5. If you were gearing up for game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, what would be the last song you would listen to before skating out for warm ups?

,

6. In regards to your equipment, what do you use? Please fill in the blanks:

Cyclone Taylor’s Top 5 NHL Snipes – 2011/2012 Edition

Last month we tossed up our take on the best goals of the 2011/2012 Major Junior season. Now it’s time to look at where these kids go after they’ve proved themselves, the National Hockey League (NHL). The NHL was full of surprises this past year with Phoenix making it all the way to the Conference Finals, and Los Angeles taking home the Stanley Cup in unbelievable fashion.

With a lockout possibly looming (please no!), the only possible way to fulfill the void of a postponed or cancelled season is to revisit some of the best moments from 2011/2012 in the ‘Big Leagues.’ Below is a list of my top 5 goals from last season, featuring the likes of Mike Ribeiro, Evgeni Malkin, Claude Giroux, Jamie Benn, and Patrick Kane. Enjoy!

5. Mike Ribeiro – Dallas Stars (now with the Washington Capitals)

Overtime is where the game of hockey gets interesting. In this clip, Ribeiro literally pulls the puck (and his stick) behind his back and around a defender. He then proceeds to wire a clapper into the top corner on Mika Kiprusoff. To this day, I still don’t know how he did it! #Sick

.

4. Evgeni Malkin – Pittsburgh Penguins

When somebody asks me who I think the best player in the game is, I always say Malkin. He may not be the leading goal scorer every year, but he is hands down the most dangerous player in the league today. In this clip, he makes a cheeky little chip play through Calder Trophy winner Gabriel Landeskog and then undresses Semyon Varlamov (all from within ~10 feet of the goal). Gino Gino Gino!

.

3. Claude Giroux – Philadelphia Flyers

You can’t help but smile when you see “Mr. Mullet” himself Jaromir Jagr still putting up points at his age. But the real beauty here is 24-year-old Giroux. In this clip, he pots his 1st goal of the season as he drives past Zdeno Chara, kicks the puck off his skate, goes backhand past Tim Thomas (while falling), and still manages to score! Look for this guy to consistently put up highlight reel goals like this for years to come. 1st round hockey pool draft pick?

.

2. Jamie Benn – Dallas Stars

I didn’t even really know who Jamie Benn was until the 2012 All Star Game in Ottawa, but wow has he really impressed me. In this clip, he throws the puck off the boards to himself, wheels by 3 defenders and then goes bar down. The goal is very reminiscent of Rick Nash (circa 2008), who Benn happened to dance around on this play. It’s crazy how things can change!

.

1. Evgeni Malkin (2) – Pittsburgh Penguins

This goal is a prime example of why Malkin is the most dangerous player in the NHL. The speed he breaks through the middle of the ice at is astonishing – he blows past 5 defenders and then slides the biscuit between Dwanye Roloson’s legs. This is the consensus Goal of the Year…I believe! #EndToEnd

.

*** Honourable Mention***

Patrick Kane – Chicago Blackhawks

This goal blows my mind every time I watch it. Sure it’s in a shootout where there is no defender to worry about, but hands like these need to be appreciated. Patrick Kane is a shootout specialist; I could spend all day watching clips of this guy dangle. What amazes me the most is that he throws ~8 quick, precise moves in the time it takes him to close the gap. Bingo!

.

@TrevorCox36 – Cyclone Taylor’s August “Beauty of the Month”

Note the moustache. “Movember,” perhaps?

This is our second ever Cyclone Taylor Sports (CTS) Beauty of the Month player interview. The point of these interviews is to get to know some of the local personalities currently playing the game that we all love – hockey. Want a skating or shooting tip? Insight into what gear other players are using? Some of the funniest dressing room pranks? If so, keep reading!

CTS would like to present to you our August Beauty of the MonthTrevor Cox (@TrevorCox36). Current team: Medicine Hat Tigers (WHL). Position: center, Shoots: left. Size: 5’8, 150 lbs

Q&A

1. How long have you been playing hockey?

    • “I have been playing hockey ever since I can remember.”

2. What is your favorite hockey memory to date?

    • “My favourite hockey memory has to be skating out of the tunnel for my first WHL playoff game at home in the Medicine Hat Arena.”

Medicine Hat Arena – capacity: 4,006 (always a sold out barn)

3. What is your favourite NHL team and favorite NHL player? Why?

    • “My favourite NHL team is the Vancouver Canucks because it’s the hometown team. My favourite NHL player is Tyler Ennis because he is a smaller player like myself who also didn’t get drafted in the Bantam Draft and played for the Medicine Hat Tigers.”

Tyler Ennis during his days as a Tiger

4. We have many hockey players who read our blog. Can you provide 1 skating tip and 1 shooting tip?

    • Skating tip: ”Stay low in your hockey stance – you get a lot more power from being low and you’re harder to knock off the puck.”
    • Shooting tip: “It’s not always about how hard you shoot the puck but how accurate you are.”

5. If you were gearing up for game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, what would be the last song you would listen to before skating out for warm ups?

6. In regards to your equipment, what do you use?

    • Skates: “Bauer TotalOne NXG, with flopped tongues. Suns out, tongues out?”
    • Stick: Easton RS, 80 flex, grip shaft, sandpaper blade”
    • Gloves: “CCM U+ Crazy Light″
    • Helmet: “CCM V10″

7. What is your “go to” pre-game meal?

    • “Spaghetti with meat sauce, a chicken breast, and a salad.”

8. What is the biggest difference between minor hockey and Junior A hockey? How did you prepare for the jump?

    • “I found the biggest difference is the speed and strength of the players and also how much more intense it is. It turns into your job when you make the jump. I prepared for the jump by training all summer and getting mentally prepared.”

9. Hockey players are known for their dressing room pranks. What is the funniest one you have witnessed or been a part of?

    • “The funniest prank I have pulled off would have to be sticking 5 chewy bars into every finger of every glove in the dressing room – gave the boys a good laugh…haha.”

10. Hockey players are also known for weird pre-game superstitions. Do you have any?

    • “My superstitions consist of having the same warm up before every game and same routine. I also put on my left sided equipment before my right sided.”

CTS would like to thank Trevor for letting us get to know him and for participating in the second ever Beauty of the Month player interview. And don’t forget, if you’re on Twitter, toss Trevor a follow @TrevorCox36 and wish him good luck for the upcoming WHL season.
